FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF SELECT PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR BANKS IN INDIA BY USING CAMEL MODEL

CAMEL model analysis is an important tool used to analyze the performance of banks and financial institutions and to suggest the necessary measures for improvement wherever required. It is widely used for evaluating the financial health, operational efficiency, and overall stability of banking institutions.

In the present study, Indian banks comprising five public sector banks and five private sector banks, selected based on their total assets, have been considered. The study covers a five-year period from 2012–2017. The main objective of the research is to evaluate and compare the financial performance of public and private sector banks in India.

The study analyzes the financial performance of the selected banks using the five parameters of the CAMEL Model, namely Capital Adequacy, Asset Quality, Management Efficiency, Earnings Ability, and Liquidity. These parameters are used to assess and rank the banks based on their performance and financial strength.

The findings of the study reveal that Kotak Mahindra Bank has performed better and secured the first rank among all the selected banks, while Punjab National Bank ranked in the least position. The results also indicate that private sector banks have outperformed public sector banks in terms of overall financial performance. Among the top-performing banks, the first five positions are occupied by private sector banks, while Bank of Baroda, being a public sector bank, secured the third rank along with HDFC Bank.

The study concludes that the CAMEL Model is an effective framework for evaluating bank performance and identifying areas requiring improvement. The comparative analysis provides useful insights into the strengths and weaknesses of both public and private sector banks and helps in understanding the changing dynamics of the Indian banking sector.
